ANSWER: On any day ending in "y," that's when. Starting on the day they are born. (Really!)

Seriously - as far as I'm concerned, any excuse will do when it comes to a reason to give books to children, and to read to or with them. But two great ones are coming up - National Young Readers Week, and the Holiday Season. (There were ALWAYS books under the tree for Christmas at our house.)

Although some adults would rather clean the gutters than lounge around with a nonfiction book, the same is NOT true of kids. Why do you suppose that is?

I'll tell you: It's because kids KNOW they still have a lot to learn, and because they have a lot of questions. Non-fiction books answer those questions, and I've seen kids from toddlers to teens spend incredible amounts of time with reference books for children. They are literally fascinated with them, and with the new things they discover between the covers of these books!

About the "Ban" on Incandescent Light Bulbs

First - let me be perfectly clear - the new U.S. government regulation does NOT enact an outright ban on 100 watt incandescent bulbs beginning January 1, 2012.

HOWEVER, as of January 1, 2012:

It will be illegal to manufacture 100 watt incandescent bulbs in the U.S.
It will be illegal to import 100 watt incandescent bulbs into the U.S.

So, while there is no ban, the effect will be the same in the long run.

The name of the new law that will take place the first of the year
What some of the valid objections are to CFL bulbs that will become one of the primary replacements
What you are required to do when a CFL bulb burns out or breaks, releasing hazardous mercury

As the supply becomes more and more scarce, the price for 100 watt incandescent bulbs is sure to rise. I do believe it has risen a little bit already. Eventually . . . they will simply be unavailable.

It may be only September but did you know that Oktoberfest starts in Munich this week? It does!

That's right - Oktoberfest actually starts in September. It ENDS at the beginning of October. The dates of this year's festival are September 17 - October 3. So, there's still plenty of time to join in the fun.
If you can't make it to Germany for the two hundred year old festival, you could always plan a trip to a local German restaurant, where, if you're lucky, there will be plenty of Oktoberfest atmosphere.

If you have lost the charger for your digital camera, and the camera uses those little square lithium batteries, I have some good news for you - so good, in fact, that I was prompted to write a review of the one I finally found.

Why I was prompted to write a Sony Cybershot Battery Charger product review:

I left the orignal charger for my Sony Cybershot Camera on a ship, and was unable to retrieve it. (Big surprise there, right?)

After buying one locally that was not only shockingly expensive, but also cumbersome to use, I found one on Amazon for a fraction of the price that was easier to use, and it has been working like a charm!

If you are needing a new charger - this one works for a variety of digital cameras - I hope my review will help you!

My paper shredder heaved its last ho earlier this month, and no one should be without a paper shredder in this day and age! (I dentity thieves will mine your trash for any little identifying piece of information, and a little bit is all they need)
I an Aurora AS810SD Shredder at onAmazon, and it shreds credit cards and CD's as well as paper. The price was good, and I ordered it.

When it came, at first I thought I may have made a purchase I would end up regretting, and was a somewhat upset. But the problem ended up turning into a pleasant surprise! Here's a link to my Review of the Aurora AS810SD Shredder... I was happy to write this review. It would be a shame for someone else to think they had a problem, when it isn't a problem at all.

Mostly, I don't consider bugs very pretty. But, I ran across a really pretty one the other day... he was among some bees who were looking for their morning nectar at a flowering vine. At first, I thought, "Oh, a GREEN bee!" and quickly snapped a picture before he flew away. But, once I uploaded the photo, and got a 'still' look at him, I realized he is not shaped like a bee at all. But he's still kind of pretty. For a bug, that is.

Anyone know what kind of insect this is?

Because I was so fascinated with him, I went ahead and put him on several items in my TropiCards gallery at Zazzle. But, I'd still like to know what he is. If you know, please leave a comment, and tell me - OK?

When you think of travel posters, what do you think of? Probably vintage advertising posters from resorts, airlines, and cruise lines. Yes, you can still get those, either originals (if you can find them) or quality reproductions.

But, what about scenes from some of your favorite destinations in poster size or large prints on canvas? These make wonderful wall art for many rooms. For example, imagine these two on bedroom walls... the butterfly for a girl's room, and the iguana for a boy's room:

With both Mother's Day and Father's Day coming up, everyone will be looking for the perfect gift for Mom or maybe a really unique gift for Dad. Here's something I ran across recently that I just had to pass on to you.

Custom bobbleheads! Yes, you can make a bobblehead of Mom or Dad - or anyone, really! Can you imagine the look on their face when you present it to them on their special day? That alone would be worth a LOT. (Be sure to have a camera ready)

There are two types of Custom Bobbleheads offered - a Personalized Bobblehead with a standard body or a Fully Customized Bobblehead. There's a large assortment of 'standard' bodies to choose from - golfer, female executive, doctor, soldier, superhero, or cook, to name just a few.

You upload photos for the company to work from so that the head is made to look like you or your recipient. On the fully customizable bobblehead, they work from the photo(s) you upload for the whole doll, instead of just the head.

Isn't water wonderful? As we all learned in school, and, in case we've forgotten, according to Wikipedia, water covers 70.9% of the Earth's surface,and is vital for all known forms of life. Personally, I'm something of a 'water baby,' and have always been drawn to it. I love swimming, snorkeling, and cruising. I like being in, on, and just about any good-sized body of water.

That's what my H2Owater gallery on Zazzle is all about - a sort of a celebration of water. It's a work in progress, and probably will be for some time to come, but it's up and running, and enjoying some sales!

Let's start off October with some silly stuff ... Little things that might make you grin.

When you need to actually send something via snail mail, here's a really cute postage stamp that should bring a smile to your face- and that of whoever receives your card or letter. This guy has some funny stuff- you should give it a look. And yes- this is REAL postage, available in various sizes and denominations.

So, if Nero fiddled while Rome burned, what do you suppose would be happening while a Poodle played a tune on a violin? Pirates are very popular these days.. not only with childrren, but also with young adults, and the yount at heart. Now, I'm not talking about the real life nasty tuhugss operating largely off the coast of eastern Afria, but the funny ones... pirate cartoons, pirate movies, pirate parties, and pirate themed gear and costumes. So, today, i'm featuring some pirate 'loot' that you can buy on line.

Suppose you want to dress as a pirate for a hallowen party? It's fairly easy to find - or put together - a child's pirate costume, but what if you need one for a grown up party? Pinatas.com may have the answer for you. They have several choices in adult pirate costumes ... from traditioinal to slightly sexy. And you can get pirate party mints there, too.

Probably the most popular pirates in recnt years are the ones from the Disney movies starring Johnny Depp. You can get officially licensed Pirates of the Caribbean themed gifts at Zazzle. Little Things Number Five - Animals

This edition of Little Things will probably be one of the last before I move on to a new theme. (OK- maybe just one more.) But up to this point, guess who I've left out? Animal lovers! So, the little things you'll see in this post are either for your pets, or have an animal theme. . . Dogs, Cats, and Horses!

Does your dog have a Dog Treat Ball? Push treats through the holes in these soft rubber balls, and watch dogs work to get them out. A slot in the center of the ball can secure one treat for a bigger challenge. They come in sets of three blue ones or four pink ones at Your Pet Store with More.

Do you love big dogs? Here's a little gift for those who have need of a lighter, and also have an affinity for Rotweilers. It's a Rotweiler Dog Flip Top Lighter. Here's one of my own little things. This is a personalized keychain called "Cat in Grass" from my TropiCards gallery on Zazzle. You'll find plenty of other animal themed keychains on Zazzle, too. So you might want to give the site a look.

And finally, at http://www.girlshorseclothes.com/, I found several little items for horse lovers ... and how many little girls does THAT include? The one shown at right is zipper pull with a seafoam green horse on it. There are several other small items for horse lovers at this store, including black and grown versions of the zipper pull shown.

Little Things Number Four

There sure are lots of 'little things' that you can find to buy on the internet. Previously, I've published three Little Things posts, and I'm rather enjoying discovering so many items (some really useful, some just plain fun) that you can hold in the palm of your hand . So, I'm going to cotinue with little things for a while. Here we go!

First up today is a striking business card holder: The Lake River Scene Business Card Holder is from Blue Skies Gift Center, and tis one really catches your eye, doesn't it? It's silver-plated aluminum, andr measures 3 1/2" x 2 3/8". Designed to fit comfortably in a pocket, salon apron, or purse, it can hold up to 12 business cards. (photo above, left)

Next- Something that's both fun and useful for football memorabilia fans - a fancy 1990's 49ers 3' Tape Measure Key Chain , this a nice 49er item , 1 1/4" in diameter , chain is 2 1/4 " long , with a 3' tape. You can find this limited issue item at Sports Cards for All (photo above, right)

I discovered some very clever Dr. Seuss Gift Tags on facebook, and just had to share these. They are recycled from the pages of a story book, and come in a set of 12. What a nice finishing touch for a child's birthday, holiday, or anytime gift! They're made by Suzanne Medrano and ar priced very reasonably. (shown above, at left)

How about something little for your little one? At Top to Bottom Children's Store, you'll find bright orange Gymboree Savannah sunset Pony O hair accessories. The set of four includes two each in the flower and cat design. These are sure to make some little girl smile.

Funally, how about something little to hang - on yourself, that is! Pictured above are (left) Lanyards to hand around your neck for holding ID cards, and (right) Daddy's Girl earrings for hanging on your lobes. The lanyards are from my own Cruise Ready Store, and come in addition to the ones shown. The earrings are from Earring Stop, where you'll find all earrings all the time.
